Peter Diamond

Peter Arthur Diamond (* 29. April 1940 in New York City, New York, USA) ist ein US-amerikanischer Wirtschaftswissenschaftler. 2010 erhielt er den Wirtschaftsnobelpreis.

Leben und Wirken

Diamond studierte Mathematik an der Yale University (1960 Bachelor) und Wirtschaftswissenschaften am MIT (Ph. D. 1963). Anschließend war er bis 1965 Assistenzprofessor an der University of California, Berkeley. 1966 ging er zurück ans MIT, wo er bis 1970 Associated Professor war, dann bis 1988 Professor, 1989 bis 1991 John and Jennie S. MacDonald Professor und 1992 bis 1997 Paul A. Samuelson Professor. Seit 1997 ist er Institute Professor am MIT. Diamond ist der Doktorvater von Ben Bernanke.

Gastprofessuren führten ihn ans University College Nairobi (1968/69), an die Hebräische Universität Jerusalem (1969), an die Harvard School of Public Health der Harvard University (1977/78) und ans Europäische Hochschulinstitut (1992).

Diamond arbeitet auf dem Gebiet der Sozialen Sicherheit. Er untersuchte besonders das Social-Security-System der Vereinigten Staaten, aber auch das chilenische und das chinesische System. Außerdem arbeitete er über Wirtschaftswachstum, Finanzwissenschaft, Unsicherheit in der Ökonomie, search theory, Politikfeldanalyse und optimale Besteuerung.

Mit seiner Frau Kate hat er zwei Kinder.
